Week 1 Concept Checks and Understanding

  • 1.1  define anatomy and physiology, and name several branches of these sciences
    Anatomy is the structure of the body such as head, limbs, genitals, hands, heart, kidneys etc whereas physiology is the function of the structure such as the lungs-(respiratory system-pulmonary-pulmonology), the intestines, bowel, throat (digestive system- Gastro-Gastroenterology), the genitals, ovaries, testes, fallopian tubes (Reproductive system-Gynae-Gynaecology)
  • 1.2  identify the organ systems and major organs of the human body and describe their locations and functions
    Integumentary: Skin to protect and house, cover, give warmth, Skeletal: bones
  • 1.3  define the important life processes of the human body
  • 1.4  understand the importance of homeostatic feedback systems and how imbalances are related to disorders
  • 1.5  describe the human body using the anatomical position and specific anatomical terminology
  • 1.6  describe the principles and importance of medical imaging procedures in the evaluation of organ functions and the diagnosis of disease.
  • describe the concept of humans as biological organisms who have much in common with many other organisms;
  • describe the characteristics that humans share with other organisms and distinguish humans from other organisms;
  • understand the scientific method;
  • describe homeostasis and the role of homeostatic mechanisms in maintaining the body’s functions within specific physiological limits;
  • demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental chemical properties of the matter of which the human body is composed, the chemistry of the body;
  • describe the basic structure of cells of the body;
  • describe the levels of organisation within the human body.
    Chemical: Atoms are the tiniest level which when two or more are gathered form molecules, which when gathered form Cells. Cellular Level- These cells have various biochemical properties, when more then one cell are together they can form tissues Tissue level and when a collection of tissues are together they can form organs  systems level which together form an organism organisimal level.
