Continuity of mindfulness

“Developed through a continuity of mindfulness, momentary concentration can grow very strong and bring the mind through stages of intense happiness that culminate in wisdom…..”

The breath becomes the perfect vehicle to experience momentary mindfulness, the inhalation and exhalation produce sensations and memories throughout the body and the mind that give rise to understanding:

A) truth of what is, and what is not

B) impermanence and permanence

C) intimate knowledge of oneself.

As thoughts become arrested we begin to be observers of ourselves, and when we observe self we come to understand that we cannot be that thing that we observe, and identification with thought, feeling, sensation all of a sudden becomes an illusion. What is this thing I keep calling me, mine? What if I let it go?

Exercise: observe your breathing without controlling it for 5 minutes like a lion would study a gazelle.

Exercise: hold your breath as if your breath is the essence of you. Notice what happens when “you” no longer breath….do you cease to exist?

Exercise: sit for 10 minutes observing your breath but not restricting your thoughts in any way. What happens to your breath when you think certain thoughts?

One Comment on “Continuity of mindfulness

  1. Observing the breath, the 5 minutes felt like an eternity, I wanted to give up. I lost interest quickly, I became unfaithful, wanting to go into thought. I took sides, made one the winner and one the loser, I had negative self talk.
